The prices of food have been skyrocketing, particularly for nutrient-rich options like fruits and vegetables.
To tackle this issue head-on, the Grand Bend Area Community Health Center has introduced a groundbreaking endeavor known as the Hensall community fridge. Positioned in the corridor of their Hensall facility, this initiative aims to assist individuals and families by offering a wide array of nutritious food items.
High costs are pervasive, and causing issues for folks of all income brackets. Miranda Burgess – Health Promoter and Registered Dietician at Grand Bend Area Community Health Center, says that the problem is further compounded,
Thanks to the wider selection of ingredients available, many members of the community who rely on the fridge now have the opportunity to cook nutritious meals, but it also has health advantages says Burgess,
The Huron County Food Bank Distribution Center ensures a regular supply of food deliveries every Monday to keep the community fridge well-stocked. Throughout the week, efforts are made to gradually replenish the fridge, ensuring a consistent availability of fresh and nutritious items. Moreover, the community has rallied behind this initiative, generously donating both food items and funds.
Burgess says that what sets this program apart from traditional food assistance initiatives is that everyone is eligible,
The support from local organizations has been nothing short of remarkable. For example, the local Kinettes group has donated feminine hygiene products and contributed $500 to support the fridge’s funding. Additionally, dedicated volunteers regularly purchase essentials such as milk, yogurt, and eggs to keep the fridge adequately stocked.
