Hold onto your hip waders!
Funding from the Province of Ontario has enabled the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) to collaborate with local landowners and enhance 21 wetlands. These nature-based solutions aim to address the shortage of wetlands in the area and improve water quality and resiliency.
$143,900 in funding was presented by MPP for Huron-Bruce Lisa Thompson, at the Morrison Dam Conservation Area.
Through the Wetlands Conservation Partner Program, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has supported 330 wetlands conservation projects, including the restoration and enhancement of the 21 wetland sites in partnership with ABCA.
Wetlands act as natural filters, absorbing, storing, and filtering water before it reaches nearby waterways. They offer numerous benefits, including environmental, economic, and social advantages, and support over 600 species of plants and animals.
“Acting as a natural filter, wetlands are an important part of local conservation efforts,” said Thompson, “By working with local landowners and expanding the presence of wetlands throughout our communities, we are laying the foundation for more resilient land and water management in the future.”
Landowners who add wetlands to their properties can witness habitat improvements within a few years, including an increase in species diversity.
