Some flooding in McNaughton Park at an earlier flooding event this year.
The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority has issued a warning for the watershed area to brace for heavy rains as a line of severe thunderstorms approaches the region this evening.
Environment and Climate Change Canada’s latest forecasts indicate that localized amounts of 50-75 millimetres (mm) are possible, raising concerns of minor flooding in low-lying areas.
The quick runoff from these storms could lead to minor flooding within the traditional flood-plain regions. However, there is also a slight risk of more impactful flooding if thunderstorm cells track along a similar path, potentially resulting in higher rainfall totals reaching the upper range of the forecast.
While widespread flooding is not anticipated, ABCA officials urge residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Drier weather is expected to prevail tomorrow, but the calm may be short-lived as another round of thunderstorms is forecasted to pass through late Friday, accompanied by a passing cold front.
ABCA staff will be actively monitoring weather conditions throughout the event and will provide updated information and guidance if necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to follow any safety instructions issued by the conservation authority.
As a precautionary measure, this flood alert message will remain in effect until 12 p.m. noon on Friday, July 28, 2023, unless local conditions warrant further updates.
