In an effort to raise awareness about Ontario’s at-risk freshwater turtle species and promote habitat conservation, the Huron Stewardship Council (HSC), in partnership with Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA), is holding their 8th Annual Hatchling Turtle Release.
The event aims to release turtle hatchlings back into their natural habitat and educate the public about the critical role these reptiles play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the challenges faced by Ontario’s eight turtle species and discover ways to protect and conserve these remarkable creatures.
The event will take place at Morrison Dam Conservation Area, on Thursday, August 31 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the event promises to be both educational and fun for the whole family.
Hope Brock, ABCA Healthy Watersheds Technician, emphasized the essential contributions turtles make to the environment. “Turtles play a crucial role in controlling aquatic vegetation and keeping creeks and wetlands clean by consuming algae and decaying organisms,” she said.
Sheldon Paul, HSC Fieldwork Coordinator, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, highlighting its success in drawing large crowds year after year. “It’s fun, it’s free, and we look forward to seeing everyone there,” he said, inviting people of all ages to join the event.
The event is open to the public, and admission is free, though donations are encouraged to support Ontario turtle conservation efforts. All proceeds from these activities will go towards supporting the conservation of Ontario’s turtle population.
