KWSP Humane Society's Building in Stratford
The Kitchener Waterloo Stratford and Perth Humane Society is witnessing a concerning surge in pet surrenders as the aftermath of the pandemic continues to affect families.
In response to this growing need, their “Pet Pantry” initiative, launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, has transformed into an ongoing program to provide pet food to those facing financial difficulties.
When the pandemic first hit in 2020, many feared that pets would be surrendered in large numbers as families struggled to cope with the economic challenges brought on by the closures and restrictions. Surprisingly, across Canada, humane societies did not experience an immediate surge in surrenders. However, as the community gradually emerged from the pandemic, that trend changed.
We spoke with Calla James, the Director of Community Engagement and Outreach,
To address this situation, the “Pet Pantry” initiative, initially an emergency pet food bank, has become a lifeline for families facing financial hardships, housing insecurity, and homelessness.
The “Pet Pantry” initiative not only assists families experiencing financial difficulties but also collaborates with social service organizations to help homeless individuals or those facing housing insecurity who are caring for pets. These pets play a vital role in their lives, serving as companions and a lifeline in difficult times.
James says that research has shown that people will feed their pets before themselves – and in an environment of growing food insecurity, initiatives like this one are absolutely vital,
As the year progresses, James says that they expect an even greater demand for their “Pet Pantry” program – and they need the support of the community to continue providing these services to families and pets in need,
By providing essential resources, they are ensuring that no family has to face the heartbreak of surrendering a beloved pet.
