An exceptionally wet August has produced less than ideal water quality both at the beach, and in your own back yard.
Jessica Zehnal, supervisor of the health protection team at Lambton Public Health, stressed that drinking water and well contamination are concerns following the amount of rain we have had in recent weeks,
Recreational water also faces challenges during heavy rain, particularly in beach communities like ours. Runoff from fields can run into the lake, alongside infrastructure overload,
An additional concern is the breeding of disease-carrying mosquitoes in stagnant water,
If possible, remove breeding grounds for mosquitos, avoid swimming in the lake after heavy rains, and get your well tested if there’s been a lot of water sitting on your land.
If you’d like to test your well to make sure it’s safe to drink, your local public health agency offers free testing – you can get a kit from them to make sure that everything is good to go.
