There may be a green bin coming to your curb sooner than you think.
Regulations introduced by the province of June 2021 that mandate producers to take operational and financial responsibility for blue box waste management – a change that takes effect in April of 2024.
Bluewater Recycling Association President Francis Veilleux says that this shifts that cost off of municipalities
Many local municipalities (including the municipality of South Huron) have expressed some interest in expanding into a green bin program at that time,
South Huron Councillor Aaron Neeb expressed his interest in pursuing such a program, at a council meeting on August 14,
Councillor Oke was also in favour of expanding the municipality’s waste services.
Expansion into a green bin program would reduce the pressure on landfills, reducing garbage waste by up to half by diverting yard waste, food waste and more.
Veilleux says that there are environmental impacts that come from diverting organic waste,
He also says that the products of composting green bin products properly generate natural gas (which can be used as fuel), as well as fertilizer.
In most areas, green bin programs are coming, it’s just a question of when. If you’re interested in a green bin program for your area, get in touch with your municipality and tell them that it’s important to you.
