You may recall a local property owner that was seeking a rezoning permit from South Huron Council back in July.
The property’s conversion from commercial to a residential unit faced a challenge due to parking requirements under existing zoning regulations – leaving a finished unit on the main floor empty in the midst of a housing crisis.
According to property owner Dean McTaggart, initial discussion about the property at a council meeting in July wasn’t promising,
A council meeting on August 14th saw the first progress that the vacant property had had in years – South Huron Council granted the rezoning, by providing parking on nearby municipal property.
He says that he sees the value of older properties that lie vacant in small towns – and that he thinks more people should consider converting them,
He credits the municipal staff for their hard work, helping him get his paperwork in order,
The conversation sparked by previous coverage of council’s deliberation generated some public interest, and McTaggart credits this interest with swaying council to think differently about the potential that his property provided.
