Huron, Perth, and Lambton are bracing for an extended period of scorching heat and high humidity to kick off the first week of school.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a heat warning – daytime highs in the range of 30 to 34 degrees Celsius, along with elevated humidity, are expected until Thursday, (September 7) when a cold front is expected to provide some relief.
Health risks are particularly high for older adults, infants, individuals with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning.
To mitigate the risks, Huron Perth Public Health advises:
1. Staying hydrated, even before feeling thirsty.
2. Rescheduling outdoor activities for cooler times.
3. Wearing loose, light-colored, breathable clothing.
4. Seeking shade or using protective gear outdoors.
5. Checking for nearby cooling centers or calling 211 for assistance.
6. Taking precautions in your home, such as avoiding oven use and keeping curtains closed.
7. Never leaving people or pets in parked vehicles or direct sunlight.
8. Being aware of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and seeking help promptly if needed.
Heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke, can escalate quickly. Symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, and rapid breathing should not be taken lightly.
Residents are also urged to monitor air quality as pollution levels tend to rise on hot days.
