A delegation from the Huron Health System addressed the South Huron council regarding upgrades needed to the South Huron Hospital clinic.
The delegation began by highlighting the substantial operational costs of the clinic, which currently amount to $500,000. It was emphasized that these costs are being covered by hospital funds, which, under the Hospital Sector Accountability agreement, are designated to cover hospital operational expenses exclusively.
Reportedly, the Ministry of Health has advised against using hospital funds to subsidize the expansion of a clinic – however, the current clinic has exceed it’s capacity.
Huron County Warden Glen McNeil, noting South Huron’s growth, stressed that the municipality is expanding, and with this growth, more residents are expected.
Presently, there are over 1000 individuals in South Huron without a family doctor, further underscoring the need for action. Additionally, residents from neighboring municipalities rely on services provided by the South Huron Hospital. Addressing these healthcare demands and recruiting physicians to serve the growing population has become an urgent matter – however, the facility that is in use presently cannot accommodate an additional physician.
Chair of the Hospital Board Bruce Shaw emphasized the necessity of an improved walk-in clinic and pointed out that the current facility is outdated and would be costly to renovate.
To address these issues, the Huron Health System is assembling a committee, set to present an action plan to the council no later than January 1st, 2024 – they have requested the presence of a councillor on this committee to provide municipal support and perspective.
Councilors Oke and Vaughan acknowledged the regional importance of the clinic, with Oke noting the high number of residents from surrounding areas who use the facility. Councilor Vaughan raised concerns about the burden on South Huron’s taxpayers due to the clinic’s regional use and advocated for healthcare as a provincial responsibility.
Discussion and deliberation regarding the presentation by the delegation will be had at a subsequent meeting.
