Local students in the area have a unique opportunity to dive into the world of water quality monitoring today as part of World Water Monitoring Day.
The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) drew attention to the 2023 Watershed Report Card, emphasizing that monitoring provides vital baseline data for detecting environmental changes, whether gradual or sudden.
By tracking indicator species and other critical parameters, monitoring contributes to a holistic understanding of ecosystem health. It also plays a crucial role in identifying emerging threats like invasive species or water quality issues that might affect both the environment and human health.
It’s also a tool for assessing the effectiveness of conservation actions and determining future strategies.
On World Water Monitoring Day, the ABCA are teaching local students in science and geography about the importance of water resources, and monitoring water quality in their community.
