Avon Maitland District School Board’s head office in Seaforth raised the Every Child Matters Flag in honor of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Friday morning.
Monique Pregent, Indigenous Education Lead, played a pivotal role in the ceremony. She smudged the flag with sage, a sacred act known to dispel negativity and invite positivity. As a testament to the rich cultural heritage, she shared a traditional song accompanied by her drum.
The event saw the participation of the entire staff, donning orange shirts as a powerful demonstration of solidarity. Matt Baker, Indigenous Student Support Advisor, emphasized the importance of standing together to support Indigenous students.
Baker shared his perspective on the significance of raising the flag over every school in the board. He emphasized that reconciliation cannot occur without truth, highlighting the need for everyone to understand the severity of historical events.
