Herbert says that keeping the community safe is not only his job, but his privelege.
As Fire Prevention Week approaches, the South Huron Fire Department is working hard to make sure that everyone is thinking about fire safety.
Mike Herbert, the Fire Prevention Officer for the Municipality of South Huron, says that this annual event aims to raise awareness and provide education to the community.
He also emphasized that fire prevention isn’t just a one-week affair; it’s an ongoing commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
During Fire Prevention Week, local firefighters will be hanging out at RONA from Tuesday to Thursday, engaging with the public and sharing crucial fire safety information. You can stop by, say hi, and get to know your local firefighters.
The focus will be on topics such as home escape plans, the importance of smoke alarms, and carbon monoxide detectors. Herbert emphasized that smoke alarms are absolutely essential and are legally required in every home.
Educating the community is a top priority for the fire department.
They work closely with schools, emphasizing the importance of home escape plans and fire safety to children. Herbert also mentioned that if residents need a smoke alarm, they can visit the fire station.
In addition to their presence at RONA, the fire department will host an open house on Thursday from 5-8 at the Exeter station (55 William Street).
As Fire Prevention Week approaches, the Municipality of South Huron and surrounding areas can look forward to valuable educational materials and engagement with their local firefighters. It’s a reminder that fire safety is a year-round responsibility, and being prepared can save lives.
