The Ontario government is making substantial investments in hydrogen projects in Port Elgin, Goderich, and Seaforth.
As part of the Hydrogen Innovation Fund, with a total budget of $15 million, Carlsun Energy Solutions is set to receive $2,391,400 in funding to explore the use of hydrogen as a clean alternative fuel.
Carlsun Energy Solutions will use the funding for two key projects. One in Port Elgin, and a second in Goderich and Seaforth.
The project in Goderich and Seaforth focuses on assessing the feasibility of using off-peak electricity to produce hydrogen and ammonia for fertilizer production, showcasing the versatility of hydrogen as an energy source.
Todd Smith, the Minister of Energy, emphasized the government’s commitment to positioning Ontario as a leader in the growing hydrogen economy. He stated, “Today’s investments…will kickstart new opportunities for hydrogen to be used as a clean fuel, creating new jobs and driving down emissions at the same time.”
Lisa Thompson, MPP for Huron – Bruce, commended the government’s efforts to accelerate Ontario’s low-carbon hydrogen economy. She expressed confidence that Carlsun Energy Solutions will play a pivotal role in job creation and economic growth across the region, while also supporting the province’s growing electricity needs.
By 2050, it is estimated that the hydrogen economy could create over 100,000 jobs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 megatonnes per year, equivalent to removing 15 million cars from the road.
