A group of 11th-grade manufacturing students from South Huron District High School embarked on an educational journey last Thursday, visiting Cap Products in Vanastra. This excursion was part of a series of stops throughout the day, allowing students to explore various trades facilities in the area.
Cap Products, a local industry specializing in fabricating pipes and couplings, opened its doors to the curious students. Their tour showcased not only the intricate work involved in their products but also the array of skilled tradespeople working under one roof. From millwrights to custom fabrication experts, the students were exposed to diverse array of trades.
The young learners expressed a remarkable curiosity and enthusiasm for the trades. Danyka Schlotzhauer, one of the 11th-grade students, described her experience as “exciting,” highlighting the exposure to various trade jobs as a significant eye-opener.
Connor Ryan, another 11th-grade student, expressed his astonishment at the variety of tradespeople that were all working under one roof.
Mike Wilhelm, the pathways teacher at SHDHS, stressed the importance of such experiences. He believes that exposing students to trades is vital for retaining young talent in the community.
The initiative was made possible by the Huron Manufacturing Association, aimed at introducing young minds to the world of manufacturing and skilled trades – hoping to fill a gap in that industry through fresh talent.
By showcasing the diverse work opportunities available, these educational tours inspire the next generation to consider pursuing careers in the skilled trades – right here, in Huron County.
