At South Huron Council’s meeting on Monday (November 6th), the ongoing debate over the proposed sewer extension outside of Grand Bend took center stage once again, as residents voiced their opinions and concerns.
Dave Ross, President of the Oakwood Park Association, presented his case against the sewer extension.
He questioned the need to oversize the pipe for potential future users that haven’t been confirmed.
Financial concerns were also raised during the presentation. Ross pointed out that an annual budget of $8.6 million is required for existing infrastructure needs, with a significant shortfall. Existing reserves have been depleted, causing concerns about passing the burden onto ratepayers.
Furthermore, Ross highlighted that there is no concrete evidence that landowners along Highway 21, aside from the developer Tridon, have expressed interest in developing their land.
Ross questioned the need for the project, emphasizing that previous expensive developments hadn’t increased the tax base, citing several examples.
He also spoke about the risks associated with the proposed extension, especially with Phase 2 of Sol Haven yet to be confirmed, and pointed at a lack of detailed information and due diligence – which he likened to a well known controversy in the political sphere.
The discussion in this meeting underscores the complexity of the sewer extension project and the diverse perspectives held by stakeholders. It remains a critical issue for South Huron, with many financial and environmental factors at play. The debate is far from over, and further discussions and analysis will be necessary before a final decision is made.
