In a special meeting held yesterday evening (Wednesday, November 8th), South Huron Council had the opportunity to hear from four candidates vying for the vacant Ward 2 councillor seat – which has empty since the resignation of Councillor Marc Denomme on Monday, September 18th.
Among the candidates, Wendy McLeod-Haggitt emerged as the winner, bringing her passion and vision for the region to the forefront. In her speech to council, she emphasized the need for diversity within the council, pointing out the current imbalance of 5 men to 1 woman. Wendy passionately argued that the community should strive for a more inclusive representation by adding another female council member. She also stressed the importance of having a younger individual at the table to connect with all demographics in South Huron.
McLeod-Haggitt further expressed her commitment to working collaboratively to unite the various wards and prevent division within the community.
She highlighted her role as a team player and her fresh perspective, unburdened by previous council decisions, which could bring new ideas to the table.
When questioned about her approach to the role of a council member in promoting economic development, Wendy emphasized the need to make constituents aware of the value of available resources and funding allocation within the community.

One of the significant questions of the evening came from Mayor George Finch regarding the South Huron fire master plan and the replacement of the outdated Dashwood fire station. McLeod-Haggitt said that despite her initial feelings, after thorough research and understanding, expressed her support for the Dashwood location. She acknowledged that while she supports the location, the financial aspect remains a challenge.
Her passion earned her the votes of Deputy Mayor Jim Dietrich, Councillor Ted Oke, Councillor Milt Dietrich, and Councillor Marissa Vaughan.
McLeod-Haggitt’s excitement was palpable.
McLeod-Haggitt’s vision and commitment to South Huron have won her the Ward 2 councillor seat, promising a fresh and dedicated perspective that resonates with the community’s values and needs.
