The dream of connecting the Bayfield community with the natural beauty of the Bayfield River Flats is one step closer to reality, thanks to the efforts of the Huron Tract Land Trust Conservancy (HTLTC) and the Bayfield River Valley Trail Association (BRVTA).
Their upcoming project aims to create a new pedestrian walkway that will link the community with the pristine wilderness at Bayfield River Flats. The area is a natural gem, home to eagles, ospreys, and species at risk.
It’s a place where people can both appreciate and preserve nature, and it’s just a short walk from Bayfield’s Main Street.
The proposed walkway, which will connect to an existing under-the-bridge walkway, will not only provide safer access but also make it easier for people to immerse themselves in the beauty of this riverbank nature area.
In 2017, the BRVTA led a successful fundraising campaign to purchase the Bayfield River Flats site, with overwhelming community support, raising over $70,000. The association continues to manage the property, which has now been donated to the land trust, ensuring its permanent preservation.

The project team has secured the necessary permissions to move forward, and now the focus turns to mobilizing public support to raise the required funds for the walkway’s construction.
They are running a fundraising campaign from November 15 to December 15, culminating in a ‘Walkway to the Future’ evening event on December 13, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Bayfield Town Hall.
As the community unites to support this cause, the dream of a new pedestrian walkway at Bayfield River Flats comes one step closer to reality, promising to enhance the connection between people and nature in this exquisite natural setting.
