Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is recognizing World AIDS Day today (December 1).
This day marks not only a global commemoration but also the beginning of Indigenous AIDS Awareness Week in Canada.
Medical breakthroughs and increased treatment accessibility are contributing to a decline in new HIV infections worldwide. The progress is transforming the lives of those with HIV, enabling them to lead long and healthy lives while eliminating the risk of virus transmission.
These breakthroughs in treatment have reduced stigma, but the fight is far from over.
Local events organized by the Regional HIV/AIDS Connection, including a vigil on December 1 from 7 to 8 pm at Innovation Works in London (livestreamed at redscarf.ca/vigil), aim to bring the community together.
Individuals are also encouraged to participate by donning a red ribbon or scarf, symbolizing solidarity and support for World AIDS Day.
To encourage testing, HPPH offers free and easily accessible HIV testing at all sexual health clinics.
Details about clinic services and appointments can be found at www.hpph.ca/sexualhealth
