It’s time for 12 days of Fire Safety, brought to you by the South Huron Fire Department and Lambton Shores Fire Department.
A staggering 17% of fires in Ontario are cooking-related – and South Huron’s Fire Prevention Officer Mike Herbert says that the primary culprit, is taking your eyes off the prize.
Herbert said that fires caused by cooking often occur when the stove is left unattended, so it’s imperative to be mindful and never leave the kitchen while using a stove.
There’s a couple of things you can do to reduce the risk of having a cooking fire get out of hand in your home.
Delving deeper into the specifics, Herbert identified common types of cooking fires, with oil fires taking a prominent position on the list. To safeguard against such incidents, he recommended prudent safety measures. For instance, ensuring cooking oils are not overheated and always having a lid nearby to smother potential flames can be game-changers in preventing kitchen catastrophes.
In the unfortunate event of a fire, Herbert emphasized the importance of having an emergency plan in place.
