Ontario is cracking down on puppy mills, and there’s new legislation to reduce illegal dog breeding.
The solicitor general says Ontario will be the first province to introduce minimum penalties for those caught operating puppy mills.
Director of Community Engagement and Outreach at The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth, Calla James explains the new legislation.
James says they “welcome any new changes that protect animals”.
Ontario already has the provincial animal welfare services act, which now allows officers within the province to act on that legislation.
Currently there is an over population of pets in Ontario.
The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth have over 220 animals in their centres right now, with 100 more on the waiting list and James is hopeful this new legislation can help.
James says there are quite a few changes that will need to be made in order to comply with the legislation.
Other concerns include separating puppies from their mothers too early and not separating sick puppies.
James says if you have a question, or are curious, reach out to the Humane Society!
