Looking to tackle the escalating challenge of affordable housing in the region, United Way Perth Huron is set to launch its new initiative – United Housing.
Recognizing the inadequacy of auxiliary organizations, Director Ryan Erb says that they took an entrepreneurial approach, forming United Housing to tackle affordability by becoming a housing developer.
As a non-profit entity, United Housing plans to leverage community support for funding, exploring avenues such as capital campaigns, community bonds, and local investors.
Although this entrepreneurial move is much needed, Erb says they first looked beyond to see if they could attract developers to build this kind of housing in Perth-Huron.
United Housing’s comprehensive approach extends beyond aiding those at the bottom of the income scale. The initiative seeks to address the broader spectrum of housing issues, including the need for “workforce housing” that enables people to both live and work locally, and affordably.
Erb says that the initiative is far beyond anything they have previously undertaken, with the agency only having a value of about $3 million, undertaking multimillion dollar construction projects is no easy task.
They have their eye on housing projects in towns throughout the area, including Exeter, Goderich, Listowel, Stratford and beyond.
The initiative responds to the region’s housing landscape, with evolving housing needs, especially for seniors who may prefer renting or down sizing, or for young people working to establish their lives.
Despite the substantial challenges ahead, Erb is convinced that addressing affordable housing is critical for the community’s well-being and economic vitality.
With Rhodes Mitchell named as the director of United Housing, the organization is poised to take on this monumental task with the support of the community, government, and various stakeholders.
