United Way Perth-Huron (UWPH) is preparing for the fifth annual Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) event here in Exeter.
February 24 marks the date for this year’s “coldest night” walk – the walk commences with check-in and a warm welcome at the Exeter Christian Reformed Church at 4 p.m. Susan Faber, with United Way states that the walk supports a vital community cause.
Participants embark on a 2 or 5-kilometer journey at 5 p.m., wrapping up with a light meal and celebration at 6 p.m., offering attendees insights into the impactful destinations of the funds raised.
Reflecting on historical successes, Faber noted the community’s resilience, citing the $47,000 and 250 walkers in 2019. Despite challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, the event continued to raise between $47,000 and $48,000 in the following years – momentum that Faber says they hope to keep.
Celebrating winter and fostering empathy for those facing homelessness, the event aims to make a dent in the monumental task of addressing homelessness and housing insecurity in South Huron.
Funds raised support the Southern Huron Connection Centre, providing immediate needs such as food, showers, and laundry facilities, alongside acting as a vital bridge between the unhoused and services, facilitating transitions to stable living conditions.
If you ask Faber, there couldn’t be a better cause.
If you’re not from the Exeter area, you can also find a walk closer to you, or participate from wherever you are – find more information and sign up at CNOY.org –
