For the last few winters, residents of Huron County may have noticed that there have been monthly film series at the Huron County Museum and Historic Gaol.
Sinead Cox, Curator of Dialogue and Community Engagement with the Huron County Museum and Historic Gaol, says these movie nights are a fun way to bring the community together.
Everything comes from somewhere, and there’s a huge influence on the things we do and see today.
When people come to Huron County, they don’t need to change their language necessarily.
People had enough others around that spoke their own language, that it was like many urban areas where you’re learning english or french at school, but can speak your native language at home or in your neighbourhoods.
Whole neighbourhoods would relocate together.
With that kind of community tightness, you can keep a lot of traditions consistent and alive.
We still have that influence on our community structures, in our holiday traditions.
People have traditions in their foods for example and Cox is looking to bring that to these film nights.
Cox says they try to pick a variation of languages or themes such as comedy, drama, documentary and more, all of which have been in different languages.
She always tries to pick films that are related to languages or food local to Huron County.
Not only are these film nights a great way to bring different parts of the community together, but Cox says there is one other important reason.
These film nights started because Cox says she is a big fan of Hindi cinema – she wanted an excuse to show Bollywood movies on the screen in the theatre.
This event is free with a library card, accessible to everyone and introduces you to a new cinema!
Coming up on February 8th is an Italian film about people and dogs that hunt truffles.
