Unlocking the rich history of Huron County has never been easier with the help of the Huron County Museum and Historic Gaol.
Sinead Cox, Curator of Dialogue and Community Engagement with the Museum says there is so much that the museum offers.
Once documents become historical as opposed to legal they end up at the museum, many of which can be found on their website.
Sometimes, things from lower tiers and municipalities end up there as well.
The museum has a collection that is broader than just the stuff that is displayed, they also have loads of different archives and research, such as Genealogy research.
The museum also does virtual research too, over zoom, with people from all over the world!
Not only only does the museum have all the research materials people could hope for, but the also have a variety of exhibits that rotate in order to showcase different parts of history.

They pick what’s being displayed based on what the theme of display is going to be. Some artifacts are more delicate and can’t be on display all the time.
Right now they are doing a series of taking collections out of storage.
When the museum first started, everything they had was on display all the time – the schoolhouse building is still like that for the most part. However, their collection has grown a lot.
If you’ve donated something and it’s not on permenant display, that doesn’t mean it isn’t being used.
Cox says the building that the museum is in now, wasn’t always a museum.
The museum has a lot of great resources online and education programs, and right now they have funding for busing from compass minerals.
If you want to learn more about Huron County’s past, start at the museum and they will point you in the right direction.
