Middlesex OPP have identified two victims of employment scams in the past two weeks – and they’re putting out a warning to residents to remain cautious.
Constable Jeff Hare, Media Relations Officer, says that two incidents have been reported in the past two weeks alone, both involving victims who believed they had secured employment opportunities online.
At this time, it isn’t known if the incidents are linked.
Constable Hare emphasized several red flags that should alert individuals to the possibility of a scam. Firstly, legitimate employers rarely request upfront payments from new hires. Additionally, he advised job seekers to exercise caution when dealing with remote employers and to verify the legitimacy of job offers through in-person meetings or thorough research.
The conversation also shed light on the challenges law enforcement faces in investigating such fraudulent activities. Constable Hare acknowledged the complexity of tracking fraud cases and emphasized the importance of promptly reporting any suspicious incidents to local authorities (if you’re out any funds) or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center (if you’re suspicious).
Importantly, Constable Hare emphasized that victims should not hesitate to report instances of fraud.
He stressed that seeking assistance is crucial not only for individual recovery but also for preventing others from falling victim to similar scams.
