As International Women’s Day approaches (on Friday, March 8th), communities around the world prepare to celebrate the achievements of women and reflect on the ongoing fight for gender equality.
Corey Allison, Executive Director of the Huron Women’s Shelter says that International Women’s Day serves as a platform to address the deep-rooted inequalities that contribute to gender-based violence.
For the Huron Women’s Shelter, whose work revolves around supporting survivors of violence, this day is both a reminder of the challenges women face and an opportunity to celebrate their resilience and leadership.
However, Corey stressed that International Women’s Day is not just for women; it’s a day for everyone to advocate for gender equality and stand against gender-based violence.
Although many will point to progress and question the need for ongoing efforts in gender equality, Corey pointed to sobering statistics and real-world examples of gender-based violence.
She also highlighted a recent report, which showed a significant increase in femicides, underscoring the urgency of continued advocacy and action.
Corey also said that International Women’s Day is a great opportunity to celebrate women that are leaders in our community – she pointed to many local leaders that are treading new ground, and creating a better community for everyone.
Despite the challenges, Corey expressed hope and gratitude for the local individuals and groups driving positive change in Huron County. From women-led organizations to community mobilizers, they emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating the contributions of women at all levels of society.
