Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) has unveiled the findings of its parent/caregiver climate survey, shedding light on the experiences and perceptions of students.
Conducted between November and December 2023, the survey aimed to delve into the experiences of parents and caregivers, offering valuable insights to inform decision-making processes within the educational framework.
One of the key highlights from the report is the revelation that 27% of respondents identified various barriers to learning, ranging from disability-related challenges to instances of racism and bullying, underscoring the need for targeted interventions to address these concerns.
Moreover, the survey shed light on areas requiring improvement, with only 56% of respondents expressing satisfaction with AMDSB’s engagement with families and the establishment of trusting relationships. Similarly, a mere 50% felt that the board adequately engaged with community organizations to foster collaborative partnerships.
The survey unfortunately uncovered instances of student distress, with 16% of respondents reporting instances where their child opted to stay home from school to evade instances of bullying. Additionally, 26% indicated that their child had experienced feelings of exclusion or unwelcomeness within the school environment.
Various proposals from the report indicate intentions to increase student welcoming through targeted campaigns, as well as a review of their anti-bullying policies.
