During the Easter long weekend, OPP West Region charged nearly 200 drivers for not wearing seatbelts.
The campaign took place from March 29 to April 1, 2024, and focused on seatbelt compliance. West Region officers made over 3200 traffic stops during this time, the highest among all OPP regions in Ontario.
Drivers can be fined between $240 and $1,000 and receive two demerit points if they or their passengers under 16 are not wearing seatbelts or properly secured in child car seats.
Wearing seatbelts as a driver and ensuring all passengers are buckled up increases everyone’s chances of surviving a collision and reducing injuries.
During the campaign total charges laid included:
194 seatbelt charges
1559 speeding charges (the most in any OPP Region in Ontario)
40 charges for stunt driving or racing
27 charges for distracted driving
29 charges for impaired driving
