Seaforth Community Hospital, part of the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance, has announced a gastrointestinal outbreak on its Inpatient Unit. Erica Jensen, Manager of Quality, Patient Safety, and Infection Control, emphasized the importance of hand hygiene to prevent bacteria spread.
Gastro, or the stomach flu, affects the stomach and intestines, causing gastroenteritis. It’s different from the flu virus and leads to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and cramps. Outbreaks often occur in places where people gather, like schools, homes, and restaurants.
To contain the outbreak, the unit is closed to new admissions, and visitation rules have changed. Only one family caregiver is allowed per day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with strict hand hygiene and protective gear requirements. Infected patients are isolated, and common areas are restricted.
The hospital is collaborating with Huron Perth Public Health to halt the infection’s spread, maintain patient care, and ensure safety. Visitors are urged to delay visits if they feel unwell, waiting at least 48 hours after symptoms disappear.
