With the summer season fast approaching and many residents gearing up for time spent outdoors, the local fire department is urging everyone to prioritize safety. Lambton Shores Fire Chief James Marshall shared valuable insights and tips to ensure safety and accessibility during emergencies.
One key point the fire department highlighted was the need for clear and visible address markings.
During emergencies, every second counts, and having easily identifiable addresses can significantly aid emergency responders in reaching the location promptly. This includes ensuring that address signs are not obstructed by snow, ice, or hidden in obscure locations.

Physical obstacles like low-hanging branches and cluttered driveways were also discussed. Low-hanging branches, while visually appealing, can hinder the passage of emergency vehicles like fire trucks. Similarly, cluttered driveways with parked vehicles or random items can impede access, delaying crucial assistance during emergencies.
Regular maintenance and clearing of such obstacles were recommended to ensure efficient access for emergency responders.
Considerations were given to the type of driveway surface, especially gravel driveways. The weight of fire trucks can cause sinking in softer surfaces, impacting accessibility. Additionally, bridges along driveways should be weight-rated to accommodate emergency vehicles without causing damage or delays.
In essence, the message from the fire department is clear: proactive measures and regular upkeep of properties can significantly enhance safety and accessibility during emergencies. By addressing these concerns and implementing necessary precautions, residents can ensure a swift and effective response from emergency services when needed.
