The tax deadline has officially come and gone, and many Canadians breathed a sigh of relief, but for some, the window of opportunity to claim valuable benefits is still open.
Kristin Crane, Director of Social Research and Planning with United Way Perth-Huron, says that for those with lower incomes, there’s actually a good chance that they’re owed money – they’ve partnered with Poverty to Prosperity Huron Perth, tax clinics run by volunteers to help retirees, newcomers, students, and anyone within the modest income bracket (which is typically anyone below living wage).
She says that if you’re owed money, it’s not too late to file your taxes and access assistance.
These clinics, operating year-round in some instances, not only assist with current filings but also help individuals catch up on previous years’ taxes.
Crane emphasizes that filing taxes is crucial for accessing funds that members of the public are owed by the government.
She says that filing opens doors to additional benefits and financial relief. While there remains a stigma around seeking help with taxes, Crane says that it’s not justified.

In 2022 alone, Huron County and Grand Bend residents reclaimed a staggering $1.7 million through these community tax programs, processing over 1000 returns. Despite this success, research suggests that a significant portion of Canadians still don’t file their taxes, missing out on vital benefits.
Despite the passing tax deadline, Crane stressed that individuals who are owed money by the government can still file their taxes and claim their refunds and benefits. This opportunity provides a lifeline for households facing financial challenges, offering a pathway to financial relief and empowerment.
To ensure equitable access to tax benefits, United Way Perth-Huron encourages residents to reach out to their nearest tax clinic, even after the deadline has passed. Individuals can find their nearest clinic by calling or visiting 211. Additionally, those interested in volunteering with tax clinics are invited to contact taxclinics@perthhuron.unitedway.ca.
