The Huron-Perth Alzheimer Society is gearing up for its largest awareness and fundraising event of the year, the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s. Scheduled for Saturday, May 25th, at 10 a.m., this event aims to honor and support people living with dementia.
Erin Dale, Manager of Fund Development and Communications, highlighted the significance of the event.
In the past few years, they’ve held seven walks throughout Huron and Perth, attracting over 380 participants across various towns. Dales hopes to see just as many, if not more, participants this year. Last year, they raised $122,000, and with the national sponsorship from IG Wealth Management, they brought in over $140,000 locally to support essential programs and services not funded by the government.
This year funds raised will be put towards local supporting programs and services for the more than 3,200 people living with dementia in the Huron and Perth regions.
Seven in ten people are affected by Alzheimer’s, directly or indirectly. Their support groups offer much-needed assistance to those affected.
One of the unique aspects of the walk is the community spirit it fosters. Participants are encouraged to form teams with family or work groups, create their own shirts, and fundraise in support or memory of someone affected by dementia.
The Exeter walk will take place at South Huron District High School (SHDHS), with registration starting at 9 a.m. Participants can arrive anytime until the walk begins at 10 a.m.
