On Wednesday morning (June 12) Shannon McGavin, Executive Director of the Well Community Collective, presented to Huron County Council to raise awareness and seek support for their Youth Wellness Centres initiative.
This ambitious project aims to create a network of hubs across Huron, Perth, Grey, and Bruce counties to provide essential mental health services for youth.
According to McGavin, one in four youth are struggling with these issues.
The Well Community Collective’s vision is to establish a one-stop shop where youth can access mental health support, education, and other vital services. McGavin touted a return on investment of $9.61 for every dollar spent, citing reduced healthcare costs and fewer ER visits. The proposed $6 million campaign will fund four hubs and sustain operations for three years.
Council members responded positively, with Goderich Mayor Trevor Bazinet advocating for immediate action.
South Huron Mayor George Finch and Central Huron Deputy Mayor Marg Anderson echoed the call for support, emphasizing the importance of the service for local youth.
A motion was passed to request a staff report on the collaboration and send a letter of support, signaling strong council backing for the Well Community Collective’s initiative.
