A court transcript obtained by The Canadian Press shows that Alice Munro’s husband did not speak to the court after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting the author’s daughter.
In 2005, Gerald Fremlin pleaded guilty to indecent assault. This wasn’t made public until earlier this month when Munro’s daughter, Andrea Skinner, shared her story of childhood abuse in a personal essay.
Skinner’s victim impact statement was submitted to the court, but she did not wish to attend and read it herself.
In her essay, Skinner wrote that she struggled with her family’s silence after her stepfather’s sexual abuse and her mother’s decision to stay with him.
