Over the Civic Day long weekend, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in West Region responded to over 4,800 calls for service, including two fatal collisions. They also issued more than 1,600 charges across southwestern Ontario.
These charges came from a provincial traffic safety campaign focused on distracted driving, impaired driving, seatbelt use, aggressive driving, and Ontario’s “Move Over Law.”
OPP Marine Units were active on waterways, ensuring boaters wore life jackets or personal flotation devices and checking that operators were qualified and had the necessary safety equipment on board their vessels.
Among the charges were 732 for speeding, 170 for not wearing seat belts, 31 for distracted driving, 45 for impaired driving, 24 for stunt driving, and 13 for failing to move over.
Other charges included 23 under the Liquor Licence and Control Act, 100 under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, one under the Off-Road Vehicles Act, eight under the Cannabis Control Act, and 26 under the Canada Shipping Act.
There were also 13 other criminal code traffic-related charges and 438 other provincial traffic-related charges.
