South Huron Council has decided to sell the former Huron Park fire station by public tender after declaring it surplus property. However, it’s still unclear whether the municipality can keep the money from the sale of the property at 421 Canada Ave., or if the profits will go to the province.
The municipality bought the property from the province in 2009 for $2, but the sale agreement included restrictions on how the land could be used and what would happen if the municipality wanted to sell it before October 2, 2029. Until that date, the province has the right to buy the property back for $2 or claim all the profits from the sale. Any sale will need to include these restrictions and be approved by Infrastructure Ontario.
The municipality plans to continue pushing the province to allow them to keep the profits from the sale.
The Huron Park fire station was closed in July 2021 after hazardous materials, including asbestos, were discovered. The firefighters from Huron Park were relocated to the Exeter and Dashwood stations. The next step in the sale process is to have the property appraised.
