The ninth annual Turtle Hatchling Release Event is back at Morrison Dam Conservation Area this afternoon, thanks to the Huron Stewardship Council (HSC) and Ausable Bayfield Conservation.
ABCA Healthy Watersheds Technician, Hope Brock, told us all about the day and how it came to be.
Brock, says that turtles are vital to ecosystems. For example, snapping turtles help manage aquatic plants and clean waterways. To help turtles, you can watch for them on roads, assist them safely across roads, protect nests, and report sightings. Improving turtle habitats is also crucial.
At the event, you’ll see turtles being released but will not be able to hold them to keep them stress-free. Trained staff will handle the release. Remember, never release non-native species into the wild.
