Kids are officially back in school, meaning a change of routine for both children and parents.
For many that means taking them to the bus stop every morning, where we still see some people smoking as they wait for the big yellow buses to show up.
Health Promoter with the Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, Rebecca Shams, says it’s not a good idea to smoke around anyone, especially kids.
Shams says many think it’s okay because they’re outside and not in a confined space.
She also says parents have an important job as a role model. It turns out that parents modeling healthy behaviors is important to them.
Shams says second hand smoke is bad for anyone of any age. She reiterates that kids can be locked into a situation where they can’t distance themselves from it.
Her best advice is, leave the cigarettes at home when you walk the kids to the bus.
