The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA) is changing its masking rules as the respiratory virus season begins. This is due to concerns about the spread of influenza, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), and COVID-19. Starting Wednesday, October 2, 2024, everyone must wear masks in clinical areas of the hospitals. In non-clinical areas, wearing a mask is recommended but not required. The hospital will provide medical-grade masks, and there will be masking stations set up throughout the HPHA hospital sites, not just at the entrances.
Masks are an important way to prevent infections. There has been an early increase in respiratory illnesses in Ontario this year, with many COVID-19 tests coming back positive. To keep patients and staff safe, HPHA has decided to make masking mandatory in clinical areas for all staff members, volunteers, and visitors. Masks are required in clinical areas where patient care is provided, including inpatient units, inpatient therapy services, emergency departments, outpatient clinics, medical imaging, outpatient laboratory services, and waiting rooms. In public spaces and non-clinical areas, such as hallways, elevators, cafeterias, meeting, education and break rooms, and administrative offices, masks are recommended but not required.
Areas where masks are required will be clearly marked. If you are unsure whether to wear a mask, it’s best to put one on. If you feel sick or have symptoms, you are strongly encouraged to wear a mask in all areas of the hospitals. Family members or caregivers who are feeling unwell should wait until they feel better to visit loved ones. HPHA may reintroduce universal masking if the number of illnesses increases during the respiratory season or for outbreak management.
