Halloween is a time for spooky and scary things, like witches’ and goblins, but fire shouldn’t be something causing you to have a fright on Halloween. South Huron Fire Chief Jeremy Becker is reminding everyone to stay safe and prevent fires during the festivities. With decorations and costumes, it’s important to keep fire safety in mind to ensure a fun and safe celebration.
One key tip is to be careful with candles. Many people use candles to light up their Halloween decorations, but they can be a fire hazard. Instead of real candles, use battery-operated lights or glow sticks. These options can create a spooky atmosphere without the risk of starting a fire.
When it comes to costumes, make sure they are made of flame-resistant materials. This is especially important for children, who may be excited and running around. If you are making costumes or using decorations, try to avoid using materials that can catch fire easily.
Another important safety tip is to keep decorations away from heat sources. Make sure that items like hay bales, cornstalks, and other decorations are placed far from candles, lights, and any heating equipment. This can help prevent a fire from starting.
As for trick-or-treating, make sure to carry a flashlight to help see in the dark and to be seen by drivers. Wearing light-colored clothing or adding reflective tape to costumes can also make kids more visible to traffic.
Finally, when decorating your home, ensure that walkways are clear of any obstacles to prevent trips and falls. This keeps everyone safe as they move around to enjoy the holiday.
