The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) Water Response Team (WRT) has expanded its Level 1 Low Water Advisory to cover the entire Ausable Bayfield watershed. Initially, the advisory only applied to the Bayfield River watershed in October. However, on November 8, the WRT extended it due to nearly three months of dry weather. This prolonged dryness has led to lower groundwater levels in shallow aquifers, reduced base flows in rivers and streams, and, in some cases, the complete drying up of smaller waterways.
The WRT bases its decisions on indicators from Ontario Low Water Response (OLWR), such as rainfall and streamflow data. Recent rainfall has averaged only 50% of normal for the past few months, much lower than the 80% threshold for a Level 1 Advisory. By early November, streamflows were only 10-20% of their usual levels.
This dry period has had a significant impact, with some smaller creeks and streams drying up entirely. To return to normal water conditions, wetter-than-normal weather will be needed in the coming weeks or months. Residents are asked to conserve water, recommending a voluntary 10% reduction in water use during a Level 1 Advisory. For tips on saving water, people can visit ABCA’s water conservation page at abca.ca.
The WRT monitors precipitation and streamflow to decide on water advisories. Under a Level 1 Advisory, a 10% voluntary water use reduction is recommended; Level 2 calls for a 20% reduction, and Level 3 may involve mandatory restrictions.
