There have been two recent incidents in the region where elderly individuals have gone missing.
One ended tragically with the death of a 71 year old man that’s still under investigation.
Former OPP Sargeant Dave Rektor says it’s time Ontario adopted “silver alerts” similar to Amber alerts but for missing seniors suffering from diseases like Alzheimer’s.
Rektor says in situations like these, time is of the essence. It can take police time to investigate and then search for someone…but a silver alert could go out quickly and lead to finding someone faster.
Opponents of the idea have suggested “alert fatigue” could be an issue while others suggest there isn’t robust evidence they actually work. Some U-S States have implemented silver alerts.
