Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) will recognize World AIDS Day on Sunday, December 1st. This annual day offers a chance to remember those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS and to raise awareness about prevention, treatment, and the importance of reducing stigma.
World AIDS Day highlights the progress made in the fight against HIV. Thanks to advances in medical treatment, people living with HIV can now live long and healthy lives. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) plays a key role in this progress by lowering the amount of HIV in the blood to undetectable levels. When HIV is undetectable, it cannot be passed on to others, a concept known as Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U).
HPPH reminds the community that HIV can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation.
To show support for World AIDS Day, HPPH encourages people to wear a red ribbon or red scarf on Dec. 1. The Stratford Red Scarf Project will also be held on that day, where red scarves, knitted by local volunteers, will be placed on parking meters and benches in downtown Stratford.
