The Middlesex County OPP are investigating a cryptocurrency fraud that cost a local resident $45,000.
On December 10th, police were called to an address in Middlesex Centre after the victim reported being scammed. The victim had responded to a pop-up ad on social media promoting a cryptocurrency investment opportunity. Believing it was a legitimate site, they clicked the link and started investing money.
The victim was asked to add more funds to unlock their initial investment. At that point, they contacted the police. The investigation is ongoing.
Fraudsters often use modern technology and tactics to create confusion and pressure victims into making quick decisions. It’s essential to verify the legitimacy of any unexpected requests before sharing personal information or money. If you feel pressured, disconnect or delete the sender’s profile.
If you’ve been a victim of fraud, contact the OPP to report it.
