Huron County OPP is investigating a scam that recently tricked an elderly resident of Huron East.
On December 13th, an 82-year-old resident received a phone call from an unknown number. The caller claimed the victim’s grandson had been in a car accident and urgently needed money to resolve the situation. The victim was told to withdraw $6,500 in cash, and arrangements were made for someone to collect the money the following day.
On December 14th, a man, described as Black and between 20 and 35 years old, arrived at the victim’s home in a dark-colored car and collected the cash. Later, the victim contacted family members and realized the story was a scam.
This type of fraud, known as the “Grandparent Scam,” involves scammers pretending to be police or lawyers. They claim a loved one is in trouble and demand money, creating a sense of urgency while instructing victims not to tell anyone.
Constable Craig Soldan of the Huron OPP advises, “Always call your family first to confirm they are safe if someone contacts you with a story like this. Never feel pressured to send or give money. Talk to your family, friends, and neighbors about this scam to help protect others.”
If you suspect fraud, contact your local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
