As the snowfall continues, OPP is urging all drivers to take extra care on the roads. Media Relations and Community Safety Officer, Constable Craig Soldan, shared essential reminders to keep everyone safe during this unpredictable season.
The changing weather brings increased risks with rain, snow, sleet, and freezing rain becoming more common. Worn tires can reduce a vehicle’s ability to grip icy or wet roads, putting lives at risk. Soldan stressed the need to slow down and allow extra time for trips. Rushing in bad weather often leads to accidents. Clearing frost, snow, and ice from your vehicle is another critical step.
Spacing between vehicles is another common issue during winter. Soldan noted the dangers of tailgating, especially on slippery roads. He recommended maintaining at least three car lengths of space to allow for sudden stops.
Winter also calls for having a safety kit in your car. Items like a snowbrush, scraper, emergency supplies, and a fully charged phone are crucial for dealing with unexpected situations. Letting someone know your route and estimated arrival time can be lifesaving if you’re traveling during bad weather.
The OPP wants all drivers to reach their destinations safely this winter. Taking these precautions not only protects you but also ensures the safety of others on the road.
