Cold temperatures combined with wind chill are expected today and tomorrow across Huron and Perth, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. Wind chill values are predicted to range from -12°C to -22°C, with the coldest conditions occurring overnight.
Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is reminding residents that extremely cold weather can lead to serious health risks such as frostbite, and hypothermia, all of which are preventable. Cold weather can also aggravate pre-existing health conditions, particularly those affecting the heart and lungs. The people most at risk include those experiencing homelessness, older adults, infants and children, individuals with heart or lung conditions, and outdoor workers or enthusiasts.
To stay safe, it’s important to dress warmly in layers, covering all exposed skin with hats, gloves, scarves, and waterproof boots. Make sure to check on friends, family, and neighbors to ensure they are safe and warm. Pay attention to signs of cold-related injuries and take frequent breaks indoors to warm up. If you get wet, change into dry clothing immediately, and drink warm beverages to maintain body heat, avoiding alcohol and caffeine.
When traveling, exercise caution to avoid icy roads and poor visibility, and ensure your vehicle is equipped with an emergency kit. For relief from the cold, residents can contact their local municipality to find warming spaces available in the area.
