Melanie Burrett has spent nearly two decades as a school library clerk, quietly helping thousands of children grow and learn. Now, she’s stepping out from behind the shelves and onto the political stage, running as the NDP candidate for Huron–Bruce in the upcoming federal election.
Burrett says she never expected to run, but when the opportunity came up, she saw it as a natural next step in her long-standing commitment to helping others.
She’s no stranger to community needs. After working with children and families for 20 years, raising a daughter, and living in the riding, she says she’s deeply aware of where things could be better—and wants to do something about it.
Burrett says her top priorities are affordability, housing, and support for vulnerable people.
She’s also focused on lowering grocery prices and improving support for seniors and people on disability support.
With recent U.S. tariffs threatening local jobs, Burrett says Canada needs to prepare.
If elected, she says she would stay connected and accountable by focusing on what everyone in the riding has in common.
Burrett encourages everyone to come out to all-candidates’ debates and make their own decisions.
