Powerlines may be more dangerous—and closer—than you think. That’s the message behind a new safety reminder in Ontario, as officials warn that contact with a powerline is one of the leading causes of electrical-related deaths in the province.
Homeowners are urged to take a few simple steps to stay safe, especially during outdoor yard work, home repairs, or spring cleanups. One of the most important things to remember is to locate all nearby powerlines before starting any project. Some wires can be hidden by trees, making them harder to spot. It’s also crucial to stay at least three metres away from overhead lines—even if you don’t touch the wire, electricity can still jump to you or your tools.
When carrying ladders, safety experts say they should always be carried sideways, never upright. That way, they’re less likely to come close to any wires overhead. People are also reminded to avoid climbing utility poles and to never enter transformer stations to retrieve toys or other objects. If something ends up in a dangerous spot, always call your local utility for help.
Digging also brings risk. Before starting a deck, fence, or other landscaping project, call Ontario One Call to check for underground utilities, including hidden powerlines, water pipes, or gas lines. That way, you’ll avoid cutting into something you didn’t know was there.
Even planting trees can bring danger. Trees that grow into powerlines can create serious hazards, so it’s best to plant away from them in the first place. If your tree is already too close to a wire, never try to prune it yourself—contact your utility company or a trained arborist instead.
One of the biggest risks comes from downed powerlines. If you see one, stay back at least 10 metres, about the length of a school bus. That’s because the ground around it may be electrified. Call 9-1-1 right away, along with your local power company.
And finally, talk to your children about powerline safety. Make sure they know not to climb trees near wires or play too close to poles or power boxes. By staying aware and taking a few simple steps, everyone can help keep their family and community safe.
